Many of us already take fish oil for its heart benefits, but here is another reason to consider taking it:

I've seen research going back to 2008, so this is not a recent discovery. However, there are now clinical trials recruiting to test a combination of Vitamin D and Fish Oil. Preliminary information indicates a 32% reduced rate of invasive ductal cancer (so I am assuming either they're not measuring other types or it has no effect).
Fish Oil is a fairly safe supplement. You might not want to wait for the results of the clinical trial as that can take years. Alas, the article doesn't say how much to take. I think I'll stick with 1 gram a day for now.
This study references DCIS, not IDC, and the participants will take 3 capsules a day. That leaves me to believe it's 3 grams...

Another great way to get your Omega-3s? Grass Fed beef! It's significantly lower in saturated fats than feedlot beef (1/2 to 1/3 less), and has up to 6x more Omega-3s...and the animal doesn't live in it's own poop, so almost no risk of ecoli! Check out the grass fed beef options near you. http://www.eatwild.com/products/missouri.html
ReplyDeleteWell, you know I love my beef. But I don't think I'm up to the challenge of eating the equivalent to give me 3 grams a day. 3.5 ounces has 100 mg...so you can do that math! Even grass-fed beef would be "lost in the rounding" when it comes to therapeutic doses of Omega 3s. Doesn't mean grass-fed beef isn't still a good idea, though. Need to start buying those Omega 3-rich eggs, too!
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I used to take Fish Oil Capsules. I think I'll start buying those again. Thanks, Michelle.
